Foundation Funds Major Building Project

Foundation for Roanoke Valley announced today that it has awarded four grants totaling $34,439 to Check Elementary School for the construction of an outdoor classroom and amphitheater.  The grants come from the Foundation’s Jacqueline S. (Jackie) and Shelborn L. (S.L.) Spangler Fund, which was established in 2006 through the estate of S. L. Spangler.  The purpose of this endowment fund is to address a wide variety of important needs and opportunities in the communities along the Route 221 south corridor, generally falling between Cotton Hill Road and Check, Virginia.  This designation reflects where the Spanglers lived during the course of their lifetimes.

Alan Ronk, the Foundation’s executive director, said in making the announcement:  “We are delighted that the Foundation, through our Spangler Fund, could make possible this wonderful addition to the Check community.  It will provide space for gatherings and performances and will play a very important role in educating local children for years to come.”

Foundation for Roanoke Valley Awards $5,000 Grant to Roanoke Children's Theatre

The Foundation recently awarded a $5,000 grant to Roanoke Children's Theatre to allow every 9th grader in Roanoke City and Roanoke County Schools to see the performance, WRECKED.  This performance was part of an ongoing RCT4TEENS program created to help teens with issues they face everyday with this particular performance focusing on underage drinking.  The Foundation was thrilled to be a part of this program and to see such a fantastic and emotional performance put on by the cast!
